Trip reports and musings on travel

Thailand

…Bustling Bangkok, beautiful beaches, spectacular karst formations, mountainous landscapes, ornate temples, delicious food, smiling locals..
Thailand is one of our favorite travel destinations (3 visits) and holds a special place in our hearts as it’s the first place we travelled together.  That trip was during Loi Krathong (Festival of Lights) and together we launched our krathongs (decorated baskets) on the Mai Ping River in Chiang Mai.  Legend has it that couples who make a wish together will enjoy long-lasting love, especially if their krathongs remain together on the water.

Thailand offers a little bit of everything...from the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Bangkok to a myriad of beautiful beaches to tons of history and culture.  And the food is phenominal.  Thailand has become a very popular tourist destination, which brings it’s advantages (good value accommodation in all categories, easy to get around) and some disadvantages (crowds, touts).  The good thing is that the majority of tourists visit just a handful of places in the country and you don’t have to travel too much further to find yourself on peaceful, uninhabited islands or quiet hillside retreats.

Here are highlights (DINK TRIP Tips) from our various trips so far...for more details or to help plan your visit, contact us!

Bangkok
  • Street food
  • Night markets
  • Temples
  • Great deals at 5-star hotels and spas

Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai)
  • Outdoor cooking classes
  • Riverside restaurants featuring Northern Thailand cuisine (khao soi, sticky rice)
  • Mountain-top temples

East Coast - Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samet)
  • Some of the best beaches in Thailand (squeaky white sand and clear water) and fairly close to Bangkok (3 hr bus ride to pier)

Southern Thailand - Andaman Sea
  • Multi-day/night kayaking trips in the Phang Nga Bay islands - caves, hidden lagoons, mangrove swamps, uninhabited islands
  • Stunning, isolated Railay beach with high limestone cliffs providing dramatic views and attracting climbers

Deep South (Trang Islands)
  • Off-the-beaten path
  • Beautiful, long beach on Ko Ngai island with only a handful of resorts
  • Blindingly white, super soft sand on Ko Mook island
  • Fresh grilled fish with amazing Thai spices
